THE HISTORY OF UNDERWEAR HAS ORIGINS AS OLD AS MAN. IN 1991 OTZI WAS FOUND IN THE ALPS, AN ICEMAN WEARING GOATSKIN SHORTS. THIS HAS BEEN THE EVOLUTION OF UNDERWEAR THAT CURIOUSLY, ALSO DESCRIBES THE HISTORY OF MANKIND.
FIRST TESTS OF WEARING UNDERWEAR
When they opened Tutankamon’s tomb in 1922 they found him wearing a linen diaper. In the case of women, they wore primitive lingerie nightgowns.
FROM THE ROMAN EMPIRE TO THE 19TH CENTURY
In the Roman Empire, personal hygiene was more important. Men and women used a kind of loincloth for the genitals. Women used linen or leather bands to hold their breasts. The use of these garments and their complexity or material depended on the social class to which they belonged. In the Middle Ages underwear was also used. From camisoles to a kind of panties that varied the material of which they were composed depending on the social stratum.
From the French Revolution, everything changes. In 1800, bodices became popular, and later, the corset began to be used. Using this caused abortions and infertility, damaged ribs and lung capacity. Men also wore corsets, but they didn’t want anyone to discover them?
HISTORY OF UNDERWEAR IN THE 20TH CENTURY
From this century on, men’s and women’s clothing became much more comfortable. Isadora Duncan and Irene Castle, two leading dancers, were the first to wear light underwear. In 1914, Mary Phelps invented the first modern bra, but it was popularized in the 1940 movie “The Outlaw” by actress Jane Russell.
Men’s underwear -the briefs were very long to the knees, but this changed in 1929 with the economic crisis, that’s why we knew the first brief in 1934.
In World War II, due to lack of materials, synthetic materials such as latex or lycra began to be used. Curves are accentuated, this until the 50s, in the 60s, more straight figures began to be used and babydolls appeared.
Starting in the 70s there are more changes in women’s underwear with the arrival of women’s liberation. there are new materials, it is more comfortable and with each decade (the 80s, 90s) it is more sensual. In the 80s (80’s Fashion for men/boys), corsets became fashionable again. In the 90s the wonderbra was born.
Today there is underwear for all tastes and colours. From the formal to the informal, to practice sports, to seduce, etc.
